Ask most candidates what General Knowledge covers on the IMAT and you'll get a shrug. It's a small section that gets almost no dedicated prep time, and that's exactly what makes it some of the cheapest points on the whole exam if you bother to prepare for it at all.
What it actually is
General Knowledge on the IMAT is a small set of questions, out of the 60 total, that draw on broader awareness rather than pure biology, chemistry, or physics content. It's genuinely different in character from the science sections, closer to broad awareness and reasoning than syllabus recall.
Why almost nobody prepares for it
It's a small fraction of the total score, so it gets deprioritized against Biology and Chemistry, which make up the bulk of the exam. That's a reasonable instinct in terms of time allocation, but it means most candidates walk in having done zero targeted preparation for a section that's genuinely trainable in far less time than the size sections.
Why that's actually a missed opportunity
Because so few candidates prepare for it specifically, it's one of the sections where a small amount of deliberate practice, working through past IMAT questions from this section specifically, can move your relative performance more than the same hour spent on an already heavily-drilled section like Biology.
How to actually approach it
Don't give it disproportionate study time given its size, but don't skip it either. Working through every past General Knowledge question you can find is usually enough to get comfortable with the style of question it asks, which is most of the battle for a section this size. (For a real topic breakdown of what recurs, see what actually shows up in this section.)
