Somewhere in the last few weeks before test day, almost every IMAT candidate we've ever talked to hits the same thought: everyone else seems more prepared than me. It doesn't matter how strong their actual practice scores are. It's close to universal, and it's worth saying plainly: feeling unready is not the same thing as being unready.

Why the feeling shows up regardless of preparation

The closer test day gets, the more visible your own remaining gaps become - every topic you still hesitate on feels urgent and obvious, while everything you've already mastered fades into the background because it no longer costs you effort. That creates a distorted internal picture: you're acutely aware of what's left to learn and almost blind to how much ground you've already covered. Confidence and actual competence move on different timelines, and late-stage prep is exactly when they diverge the most.

It hits high scorers too

We've both felt this, going into our own exams - and every strong candidate we've mentored since has described some version of the same thing. It's not a signal you're behind. It's a near-universal side effect of caring enough about the outcome to notice everything you haven't nailed down yet. Ironically, the candidates who feel most confident heading in are sometimes the ones who've stopped noticing their own gaps - not necessarily the ones with fewer of them.

What actually to do with the feeling

Don't treat it as data about your readiness - treat your actual mock exam scores and review patterns as the data, and the feeling as background noise that shows up regardless of the numbers. If your practice scores have been trending in the right direction and you've been reviewing properly (see: how to actually review a mock exam), trust that over the emotional read of the final stretch, which is reliably unreliable for almost everyone at this stage.

It also helps enormously to not sit with it alone - see why isolation makes this worse. Saying the "everyone else seems more ready" thought out loud to someone else preparing usually reveals they're thinking the exact same thing about you.

The feeling of not being ready will very likely still be there on test day, no matter how prepared you actually are. That's normal. Walk in anyway - the data, not the feeling, is what your score is actually built from.
