It's normal, and it's rarely a sign you're on the wrong path - most of the time it's prep fatigue wearing a bigger costume. We hear from a lot of candidates who are months into IMAT prep, doing everything right, and quietly wondering whether they actually want this at all. It's rarely framed as a big dramatic crisis. It usually shows up as a small, nagging thought during a late study session, and it can be unsettling because it feels like it should have an answer already.
This is a lot more common than it looks from the outside
Almost nobody posts about it, which makes it feel like a private, unusual problem when it's actually one of the most common things candidates go through during a long prep timeline. Wanting something enough to work this hard for it and still questioning it aren't contradictions. They happen together constantly, and neither one cancels the other out.
Separate the fatigue from the actual doubt
Most of what feels like doubt about medicine is really exhaustion from the exam in front of you, wearing a bigger costume. A rough week of mock scores, a stretch of low motivation, or comparing yourself to candidates who seem more certain can all get relabeled in your head as "maybe I don't even want this," when the real issue is just that you're tired and it's temporary.
A useful way to tell the difference
Ask yourself what you'd choose if the IMAT, the deadline, and the pressure all disappeared for a moment, and you were just picturing the actual work of being a doctor years from now. If that picture still pulls you in, what you're feeling is prep fatigue, not a wrong choice. If it genuinely doesn't, that's worth sitting with honestly rather than pushing past.
What to actually do with it either way
Don't make a permanent decision about your career in the middle of your hardest week of studying. Talk to someone a few years ahead of you in the process, not just other candidates who are in the same uncertain spot you are. And give the question room to resolve itself after the exam is behind you, when you're not answering it under pressure.
